The production of the first model was carried out on the further improvement of the car, the effect of which was the target model KrAZ-256B, the construction created in 1965 and produced since May 1966. Introduced in the improved engine JaMZ-238 with 240 hp (from the end of 1966), enhanced gearbox with changed ratios, introduced a new load box, a new steering mechanism (from MAZ-500) and other improvements to the vehicle. This model had a load capacity of 12 tons. In the course of production, KrAZ-256B was subject to further improvements, including from December 1968, pneumatic steering support was replaced by a hydraulic one, and the DC generator was replaced by an alternator. In 1969, headlamps and position lights, previously free-standing on the fenders, began to be mounted on the front face of the boxes fastened to the front of the fenders; at the same time, the grille shielding the headlamps from the front was abandoned. A 225-liter rectangular fuel tank placed on the right side was then replaced by a simpler cylindrical one (165 l), and two rectangular rear-view mirrors were installed instead of one square one. From 1972, an additional two direction indicators were mounted on top of the front fenders. In 1973, the car received the USSR State Seal of Quality.
